Each of the twelve houses represents a different sector of experience, a particular phase of what Rudhyar calls the "spectrum of experience". The knowledge of the astrological houses is also fundamental in the interpretation of the transits. When planets visit a house, they "light up" that part of the graph and energize the characteristics of that house. Astrologers use houses to advise which areas of life will be stressed by the planets and therefore how to best manage the effects of transits, especially the most difficult ones. The first houses are like knowing houses, while the six houses are like last interpersonal houses.

Houses can be occupied by one or more planets, or they can be empty. The more planets there are in a house, the more important that field of experience is in the person`s life. A grouping of at least three planets in the same sign or house is called stellium and is a very strong astrological configuration that can have significant influences on the personality and behavior of the individual. In the natal chart, the stellium can represent the strength of the subject but at the same time also the most vulnerable point of him. Generally speaking, this configuration reinforces the typical characteristics of the sign in which it is found.
