2. Transits of Mercury in conjunction

For a transit of Mercury to be visible from Earth, Mercury`s orbit must align in the right way, so that from our perspective, the planet is directly between us and the Sun. So what does it look like? During a transit of Mercury, a small dot will cross the face of the Sun within a few hours: this impending transit will take approximately 5 hours. This small patch covers much less of the Sun than it does during a solar eclipse, when the Moon (our closest neighbor) covers most or all of the Sun.
