The houses in the natal chart are thus connected to each other in interesting ways.

The planetary ruler, or "traveling delegate" of a house sign acts as a messenger, carrying energy from the house it rules to the house it is placed in. Keep in mind that there are many different interpretations, or possible manifestations, of house-to-house rulers.

The sign on the cusp of a house reveals the area of ​​life where the principle of that sign will be learned. The principle manifests itself in more than one area of ​​life, as the ruler, or TRAVELING DELEGATE of that sign, takes the message to another home.

2. Symbology of the astrological tenth house

For example, with Virgo in the fourth and Mercury in the eleventh, the ruler of the fourth is in the eleventh. The same thing is true if Taurus is in the fourth and Venus in the eleventh: the ruler of the fourth house is in the eleventh and the energy of the fourth is flowing into the eleventh.

The status of the ruler of a house should not be underestimated. His "condition" of him is determined by his position in the card (for example on a corner), by the sign he is in and by the aspects he presents

The ruler of a house is also important in revealing what we do to "play" the principles of that house. He shows how things in that house are accomplished, and so he relates a lot to experiences. For example, the 10th house ruler shows what we do to carve out an identity. The aspects that the ruler of a house does help to complete the whole picture. It is interesting to note the possible aspect between the ruler of the Ascendant, for example, and the Ascendant himself! If the ruler of the Ascendant is square to the Ascendant himself, we usually have a person who is not sure how he should behave. It can be difficult for others to know what to expect from this person, as they may be bold one day and shy the next.

The following are brief interpretations of house-to-house rulers according to a classic text, Muchery 1927. This is not psychological astrology! They are often quite fatalistic and shouldn`t always be taken literally.

What I present here represents the consensus of the classical astrological tradition as a guiding thread through the astrological texts of the Middle Ages, the Renaissance and the Baroque era. Try them out, see if you like them and if you get stuck on the meaning of a house or if it doesn`t land, let it marinate until it clicks. Many of these are drawn from the "joys" of planets: if a planet enjoys being in a house, it affects the overall meaning of that house.

2. Symbology of the astrological Fourth House

Now, the key to understanding how houses work is figuring out which planet rules the house and looking at the condition and position of that planet in your chart. We can use this extremely simple formula to get started.
